Preventing Urinary Tract Infections

If you've every had a urinary tract infection (UTI), you know how painful they can be. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to prevent UTIs from occurring.

To prevent UTIs, try the following:

  • Be sure to stay hydrated. Drinking water is best for preventing urinary tract infections. Cranberry juice is also helpful, as it fights infections. However, people taking warfarin shouldn't drink cranberry juice.
  • When you feel the need to urinate, use the bathroom as soon as possible. Don't hold urine in your bladder.
  • If you're a woman, wipe from the front to the back, not the back to the front. By doing the latter, you can transfer bacteria from your anus to your urethra.
  • Use the restroom after having sex.
  • Don't use feminine hygiene sprays, deodorants, douches or powders. These can irritate your urethra.
